2016 NUS GSS Freshmen Welcome Formal Dinner Update

Dear Graduate Freshmen,

The registration for freshmen welcome dinner is now closed!

Due to overwhelming responses, the successful registrants will be decided through a balloting system. Only successful registrants will be notified via email from Thursday (21 July) onwards.

We appreciate all of you for being passionate about our event and we regret to have only limited seats for the welcome dinner. Do not worry if you are not able to join us this time, we have a series of events planned ahead in the upcoming semester especially for graduate students like you! Do check our facebook and website regularly for news and event updates!

NUS 3MT Competition 2016 (2)

The annual NUS Three Minute Thesis (NUS 3MT) Competition is back!
If you have the ability to showcase your research to a general audience in three minutes, then this competition is for you! 
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition is an academic competition developed by University of Queensland for research graduate students in 2008. It has a global participation with almost 200 universities in more than 18 countries. GSS will be organizing the NUS 3MT competition to select finalists to participate in the various regional and international 3MT competitions. 
This year NUS will be participating in three 3MT competitions:  
Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition
McDonnell International Scholars Academy Symposium
Universitas 21 3MT Competition 
The NUS 3MT Competition will be an online video competition. Interested participants will have to submit a self-recorded 3-minute video to GSS. The winner/finalists from each competition will be selected by the judging panel based on the same judging criteria as the international 3MT competition.

How to Participate:  
  • You must be a PhD student who has passed your preliminary qualifying examination and have not passed your thesis defense on 23th September 2016.

Two winners will be selected from each theme. 
First Prize: S$500
First runner-up: S$300
(Results will be released on 15 June 2016)

Asia-Pacific 3MT Prizes
  • Winner: $5000 research travel grant + funding and entry into the 2016 Falling Walls Lab Final and Conference in Berlin
  • Runner Up: $2000 research travel grant
  • People’s Choice: $1000 research travel grant
 2016 McDonnell International Scholars Academy Symposium
  • Winner: $1000 USD
  • Finalists will receive up to $2000 USD to attend the Symposium. Stipend must be used for airfare and lodging only.
 Universitas 21 3MT Competition
  • Winner: $2500 USD to visit a U21 university of their choice to benefit their research or on-going career development.

  • The Information Session is provided by the GSS to provide interested participants with the rules and criteria of the competition. We will also be explaining the details of the competition and answer any of your questions. 2016 NUSGSS Sports Carnival

Dear Graduate Students,

The annual flagship event of GSS is back! The Graduate Student Sports Carnival 2016 is happening on 26th of March, next Saturday!!!

All NUS graduate students, research staff and alumni are welcome to participate in competitive and fun games: badminton, basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, soccer, rock climbing, laser tag and bubble soccer! There are attractive prizes for badminton, basketball, soccer and Ultimate Frisbee winners and there will be a lucky drawat the end of the event as well!

Time: Saturday, 11am-6pm, 26th April

Registration time: 11:00am

Venue: UTown (Registration, Opening ceremony and  warm-up at UTown Edu Sports Hall 2)

Prelims (Badminton, Soccer, Frisbee): Friday, 1pm-6pm, 25th March

Register online HERE. Registration for competitive sports will end on Wednesday (23 March).

Note: All sports games in this event are FREE for all NUS graduate students research staff and alumni. All you need to do is just to register online here.

Free Goodies for the first 100 registrations are going to be given away.

Apart from rock climbing, all other games are team games. You may sign up either as a team or an individual for the team games. Individuals or incomplete teams will be randomly assigned members to form a complete team. On-site registration is allowed for laser tag and bubble soccer, but participants slots are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Important note:

You will need to sign an Indemnity Form in order to participate in this event. The form is attached in this email.

Game details:

For rock climbing, there are three sessions. Number of participants are limited. 24 participants are allowed for each session. The registration is on first-come-first-served basis. The three sessions are:

Session 1: 11:30 am to 12:30 am

Session 2: 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm

Session 3: 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm

For badminton, there are three categories: mixed doubles, male doubles and individual (both male and female compete together). The Prelims for the badminton event shall happen on Friday(25/03/2016) from 2:00pm to 6:00pm  at UTown EduSPorts Hall 1.

For basketball, there will be a male 3vs3 match (3 players + 2 substitutes per team).

For Soccer, there will be five per team(5 players + 2 Substitutes). The prelims shall happen on 25/03/2016 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm.

For Ultimate Frisbee , there will be five per team(5 players + 2 Substitutes) . The prelims shall happen on 26/03/2016 from 3:00pm to 5:30pm

Laser tag and bubble soccer consist of 5 players per team.
